Open Circuit Technical Diving

Becoming a technical diver doesn’t happen over night. It is a long path with many branches to different types of technical diving. For some people the attraction is deep shipwrecks while others it may be unexplored caves. Yet others may just want to advance their skills to a new level of mastery and redundancy. But one thing is for sure, once you become trained in technical diving and adopt the technical divers mindset you will never look at diving the same way again.

At Tech Dive Asia we have experienced award winning Instructors and Instructor Trainers that specialise in either Wreck diving, Cave Diving and sometimes both. Sidemount or Backmount double cylinders we teach and dive both.

The award winning Instructor Trainers at Tech Dive Asia teach more technical diving instructors than any other diving center in Thailand.

The Tech Dive Asia team are the first Instructors in Thailand to be teaching the complete NEW range of PADI Technical Diving Technical Diving courses released in November 2023. From Beginner level through to Instructor levels, Including the new TRIMIX levels.

Which training agency is best for technical diving?

There are a number of technical diver training agencies that have a wide range of courses for aspiring technical divers and here at Tech Dive Asia we can certify through most of them. When training to be a technical diver it is far more important to choose the instructor you want to train with than the agency they certify through. Most agencies are members of The World Recreational Scuba Training Council (WRSTC) and the Rebreather Training Council RTC. Both these organisations set the standards and training requirements that the training agencies we certify through incorporate into their training programs.

Have a chat to one of our Instructors or Instructor Trainers about what is the right fit for you.

Where to start your training

Because technical diving is a form of scuba diving that involves deeper dives, longer bottom times, and more complex equipment configurations. It is typically pursued by experienced divers who are looking to push their limits and explore more challenging environments. However, technical diving is also associated with higher risks and requires specialised training and equipment to be done safely.

The first step in becoming a technical diver is to gain experience as a recreational diver. Most technical diving courses require candidates to have logged a certain number of dives and hold an advanced open water certification or equivalent. This ensures that candidates have a solid foundation of knowledge and skills as a recreational diver before attempting technical diving.

The next step is to complete specialised courses that cover the skills and knowledge required for technical diving. The most common courses include basic nitrox, decompression procedures, and trimix. These courses cover topics such as dive planning, gas management, decompression theory, and equipment configuration. These courses typically involve several levels of training, each building upon the skills and knowledge learned in the previous level.

Once the specialised courses have been completed, divers will need to obtain specialised equipment. Technical diving requires specialised equipment, such as multiple tanks, regulators, and a variety of backup systems. Divers will need to invest in high-quality equipment that is specifically designed for technical diving. This investment can be significant, but it’s essential to ensure the safety and success of each dive.

Building experience as a Technical Diver

Building experience and logging dives is also an important step in the process of becoming a technical diver. Technical diving is a demanding activity that requires experience and skill. Divers will need to log a significant number of dives to build their confidence and proficiency in a variety of diving environments. This experience is crucial for developing the skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful technical diver. We have lots of technical diving trips and entry level expeditions for you to join and gain experience.

Maintaining certification and continuing education is also an essential part of the process of becoming a technical diver. Technical diving requires ongoing education and training to maintain proficiency and stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and technologies. Divers will need to regularly take refresher courses and attend workshops and seminars to stay current.
