What is a Diver Medical Technician?

A Diver Medical Technician (DMT) is a trained member of a diving operation who can provide advanced first aid and emergency medical support to an injured or ill diver while further medical assistance is being arranged.

Diving emergencies can occur far from hospitals, emergency departments and specialist medical services. A DMT provides an important link between the initial incident, the diving team and definitive medical care.

The role can include:

  • Assessing an injured or unwell diver
  • Performing primary and secondary patient assessments
  • Monitoring vital signs
  • Providing emergency oxygen
  • Performing CPR and using an AED
  • Managing airways and respiratory emergencies
  • Managing bleeding, wounds and traumatic injuries
  • Recognising and responding to diving-related illnesses
  • Assessing suspected decompression illness
  • Recognising barotrauma and pressure-related injuries
  • Managing medical emergencies in remote environments
  • Communicating effectively with medical professionals
  • Supporting evacuation and transfer to definitive medical care
  • Understanding the principles of hyperbaric and chamber-based care

DAN DMT Course โ€“ Designed for the Realities of Diving

Our DAN DMT course has been designed specifically with the needs of professional and experienced divers in mind.

Often diving takes place in remote locations. Either liveaboards far from shore, cave diving sites in the jungles of South East Asia or mines located far from civilisation. The course is particularly relevant to people working or diving in environments where emergency medical assistance may not be immediately available and a dive medic is the first line of support.

This includes:

Professional Divers

Develop advanced emergency medical skills relevant to professional diving operations and the care of diving casualties.

Technical Divers

Technical diving can involve deeper dives, complex equipment, extended decompression and remote locations. DMT training provides additional medical knowledge for managing emergencies in these demanding environments.

Dive Boat Operators

Learn how to assess and manage a diving casualty while coordinating the response, communication and evacuation process from a dive vessel.

Liveaboard Operators and Crew

Liveaboard operations can take place many hours or days from the nearest hospital or specialist medical facility. DMT training helps crew members prepare for medical emergencies occurring offshore and in remote locations.

Dive Guides and Dive Professionals

Develop advanced first-response capabilities that complement existing rescue, first aid and diving qualifications.

Diving Explorers

Exploration diving often takes place in environments where conventional emergency services are unavailable or delayed. DMT training provides additional preparation for remote diving emergencies.

Diving Safety Personnel

For those responsible for diving safety, emergency preparedness or diver support, DMT training provides a deeper understanding of casualty assessment, emergency treatment and diving medicine.

A 10-Day DAN Diver Medical Technician Course

Our programme is structured into two connected phases:

Phase 1 โ€“ 5 Days of eLearning

The first five days are completed through structured online learning. This allows you to work through the medical and diving-related theory before attending the practical course. The eLearning component covers a broad range of subjects relevant to the Diver Medical Technician, including:

Phase 2 โ€“ 5 Days of Practical DMT Training

The second phase is five days of intensive practical training. This is where the theory becomes practical. You will work through realistic medical and diving emergency scenarios designed to develop your ability to assess a casualty, prioritise treatment and work as part of a diving emergency response team. Practical training includes classroom-based skills, scenario training and introduction to the hyperbaric chamber.

Depending on the scenario, practical training may include:

  • Patient assessment
  • Primary and secondary surveys
  • Vital-sign monitoring
  • Neurological
  • Airway management
  • Airway maintenance (laryngeal mask)
  • CPR and AED
  • Emergency oxygen administration
  • Trauma assessment
  • Bleeding control
  • Wound management
  • Suturing
  • Splinting and immobilisation
  • Shock management
  • Setting up intravenous infusions
  • Use and hazards of the drugs and intravenous fluids
  • Parenteral administration of drugs
  • bladder catheterisation
  • Chest decompression for pneumothorax
  • Recognition of diving-related illness
  • Management of suspected decompression illness
  • Management of barotrauma
  • Emergency communication
  • Remote emergency planning
  • Hyperbaric chamber procedures
  • Working with diving physicians and medical support
  • Scenario-based emergency response

The emphasis is not simply on knowing the theory. It is on being able to apply your knowledge when a diver needs help.

Why Choose a DAN Europe DMT Course?

The DAN Diver Medical Technician course combines diving knowledge with advanced emergency medical training.

It is designed around the realities of diving environments rather than generic first aid alone.

You will learn how to consider:

The patient.
The diving environment.
The dive profile.
The potential diving injury.
The available resources.
The distance from definitive medical care.
The need for evacuation and medical support.

This is particularly important when diving takes place offshore, on liveaboards, from remote dive boats, on technical expeditions or in locations where emergency medical services are not immediately accessible.

Prepare for the Emergency Before It Happens

A medical emergency is not the time to learn what to do.

For divers operating offshore, on liveaboards, from remote vessels or in isolated locations, the ability to recognise a problem and begin appropriate emergency management can be critical while further assistance is being arranged.

The DAN Europe Diver Medical Technician course gives experienced divers and diving professionals the opportunity to build specialised medical knowledge and practical emergency-response skills for the diving environment.

Train for the environment you actually dive in.
